• SocialOomph works out more expensive, but can run on every computer and phone (it’s a website, not a download)
• TweetAdder is cheaper and more far functional, but installs onto your computer (so is less portable)

If you work from mainly 1 or 2 computers, go for TweetAdder.  SocialOomph isn’t as powerful when it comes to adding new followers on twitter. TweetAdder is the king of that.

The site has become incredibly popular because it connects people with a global audience. Membership numbers have continued to explode on Twitter since the site began a few years ago, and you can use this popular Web 2.0 MONSTER as a website Traffic Machine.

Step 1. Set up your account correctly

Go and look at your Twitter profile right now.

Have you…

* Added an interesting image?
* Customised your colors?
* Change the default background?
* Filled in your bio and location?
* Added your site link in the bio?

If you’re missing any of these, go and do them now. The more interesting your profile is, the longer you’ll hold people’s attention. At least, that’s where we begin!

Step 2. Follow Targeted People

If you don’t already have a popular blog or email list, you will initially grow your list of followers by finding and following key people yourself. You follow them, they follow you back.

You can follow people manually and keep track of it all manually, but I recommend getting a tool to do it for you. I use TweetAdder. Try the demo to see if you like it before you pay anything.

Step 3. Get Involved.

You can’t just post link after link, expecting your new audience to just lap it up. You need to get involved in what people are saying. ReTweet interesting posts, @reply to people, Direct Message where appropriate. Don’t just expect to get tons of traffic for no reason.

Step 4. Feed your blog onto Twitter.

I’ve written a tutorial about how to do this here.

You get each new blog post automatically “Tweet itself”. Driving traffic to your blog is perfectly acceptable, sending people to your salespage generally is not. Your followers will get tired pretty quickly.

Step 5. Be Patient!

Web traffic is a patience game. Don’t think it will all happen over night.

Keep at it, work hard, and tweet until you can tweet no more!

Any professional who wants to build a list of followers on Twitter, ANDactually have time to run a business and eat and sleep, needs to work smart. It’s no use just sitting there all day long clicking Follow, Follow, Follow, Accept, Accept, Accept.

I’m going to admit something. I HATED Twitter for a very long time. I hated how much time it took to interact with a site that is meant to be all about short-and-sweet. Brevity was the name of the game, and yet I was finding myself wasting hours and hours trying to get anything meaningful done.

HOW I USE TWITTER NOW

My Twitter experience now is a lot more relaxed, and I spend a lot less time doing the crap I used to spend hours doing. My hatred of Twitter is now slowly fading…

I now use a piece of software called TweetAdder. It runs on my laptop and manages my Twitter accounts for me, almost completely automatically. It won’t write messages for me or anything like that, but it will relentlessly add targeted followers for me. And unfollow them too if I want.

I type in the kind of person I want to follow, with keywords or location data, or by followers of another user, and press Go. It then adds as many people as I tell it to.

I use this software to add niche followers in my niche accounts, where I promote certain links in the twitter bio space and in my tweets. I do actually interact with people, I don’t just post links all day. But building that audience in the first place is what this software is excellent at. You press go and it builds your twitter list.

• Let’s say you went wild in the beginning and followed tons of people for a very dumb reason..
• Or you automatically followed back everyone who followed you
• Or you even followed a bunch of people hoping they would follow you back

There are a few websites that will help you unfollow the “dead weights”, like FriendOrFollow and UnTweeps, and there’s always my favorite option of TweetAdder.

Don’t unfollow over maybe 500 people in one go, otherwise you might raise some red flags at Twitter HQ.

Software like TweetAdder can stagger your unfollowing and also help you get more Twitter followers. I recommend it [I use it myself].

If you’re on a budget though, or you’re not using twitter for marketing purposes, just go with one of the free websites above and don’t worry about the Tweet Adder tool.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1. TweetAdder follows a specific group of people for you. Maybe you want all people in Texas, or all people talking about a certain niche, etc. You must narrow down the criteria.

Step 2. TweetAdder watches your follower-to-following ratio and makes sure you don’t get your accounts flagged for any “funny business” by following too many people in one go if nobody follows you back.

Step 3. TweetAdder waits about a week before unfollowing anyone, to see if they follow you back. It tracks each follower individually to check. If someone hasn’t become a new follower of yours… you stop following them.

Step 4. Repeat! As time goes on you will see that these 3 steps will grow your twitter friends list as large as you like. Into the tens of thousands!

And Now: Twitter blocked the capability. I can see why if the tool was used by thousands of spammers – I would block it myself if I owned Twitter – but it’s still frustrating for all of us who used recurring posts legitimacy.

Alternatives: Use a site like FutureTweets or software like TweetAdder to schedule messages to be posted in the future, and copy and paste your tweets in multiple times. If you added 15 tweets to post once a year, you’re covered for long enough!

You’re just not allowed to have a single post recurring for ever and ever.

BUT: Twitter doesn’t have a problem with scheduling tweets. They just don’t like one tweet constantly recurring.

Or you were being followed by a bunch of spammers.

I would guess it’s most likely that last option.

Every once in a while Twitter will delete thousands of spammer accounts in one big go. These are the people who follow several thousand people in a matter of days, post repetitive messages, and send spam Direct Messages far and wide.

If your Twitter followers dropped noticeably overnight (and you’re pretty sure it’s not down to boring or offensive posts) then you can probably be certain Twitter has deleted tons of spammers.

BUT REMEMBER:

Few people like receiving the direct messages. If they know how, they have already opted out.

You can opt out of all automatic direct messages sent from SocialOomph, which accounts for a large amount I would imagine.

HOW:

1. Follow @OptMeOut

2. Wait for them to follow you back [automatically]

3. Send them a DM, saying whatever you like

4. Unfollow them

The KEY is that you have to do it in that order.

This won’t stop the DM’s sent from TweetAdder or the other Twitter friend adders, but should remove a lot.
